to me, "Addons" or "Expansions" are like the large summer update they did last year, when they introduced Sorrows Furnace, they also introduced the Faction system (Balthazaar faction), green weapons and a few other little bits here and there..

that, to me is an expansion, its a new area, new items (green) new content/things to do (faction) but keeping in with the original...

i think they'll do something similar for Factions around the end of August, then around march 2007 - we'll see Chapter 3

ANets original Quote was that they aimed to bring out further 'expansions' every 6 months, well, they did...

Prophecies - 6 months - sorrows furnace - 6 months - Factions..... What next??

Factions was longer than 6 months and so was Prophecies. CH3 would be the first to land on time. (I hope)

dont know how we will be transfered from cantha to the 3rd chapter (as in we go back to tyria with mhenlo then...? something happens or someone comes to us for help or whatever idk...)

well all i know is, i want an expansion on chapter 1. it would be like yeah 2 years or + later this happened, or we finally visit Orr for knowledge (go underwater or something) or whatever. its not like its hard, there would be a tab added to the map screen (progress 2 years -for chapter X). and back...do the dwarves end the war? do the undead stop attacking kryta? were the titans all destroyed? (you know the quests - did we kill em all?) gahhhhh

well with the 6 core classes already in place, does that mean that they will continue to build more depth as classes while assassins and ritualists will be neglected?

As far as chapter 3 PvE, ANet still has a way to go before it feels as compelling as the PvP play.

It should be an expansion - but it wont be. They want their 50$.

I was wondering that as well, the Assassins and Ritualists that is. They have no skills or drops in Tyria, only the core classes do. So I have been curious as to whether they will get the same in future chapters.

I personally hope they stick to what Jeff Strain said and make each chapter a different game mechanic. In other words I am hoping they don't try to continue the Factions mechanic of merging PvE and PvP. I would prefer them work on enhancing the game play and content of each game style and not wash them down with poor merging. My opinion of course.

hi

sorry but not correct

Prophecies was released April 28 not March

Factions - April 28 2006 with one full year having started with the release of GW and was on time.

chapter 3 Nightfall was started 6 months after chapter 2 started by the chapter 1 team and will be out Oct/Nov this year not 07

with the release of Factions it has been announced chapter 4 is starting and will be out next April 28 2nd anniversary

This is a stupid question. Really. It will be stand-alone. They've been saying that for TWO YEARS. Each Chapter will be stand-alone.

Factions is not an expansion. You can play it if you own ZERO other games. Nightfall will not be an expansion. You will be able to play it even if you own NEITHER Prophecies or Factions.

What is a good question is the presence of content for each class. A half-recalled passage I might have read somewhere stated that each new chapter would contain content for the six core classes (W, R, E, N, Me, Mo), as well as any new classes exclusive to that chapter. So unless something's changed there won't be any Ritualists or Assassin goodies in the next installment.

Expansions are things like sorrow's furnace, we should be getting an expansion in a few months, if anet sticks to their word. so it will probably be severely delayed!
I sure hope so. There's a vast area of the Cantha Continent that we dont actually get to touch, not to mention the extra little island in the southwest.

I agree - I dont think there is much of a doubt that it will be an expansion and the places you suggest would be good places.

But it does raise an interesting question about if it will be an expansion for JUST factions?.. well, it must be, unless they do some kind of cool expansion which adds area's to both prophecies and factions

this has been answered officially.

aside from overall game upgrades (trading, graphics engine, etc) there will not be new content added to chapter one.

special holiday events will still be held.

To the OP, its very likely that they will market C3 as a standalone as you mentioned rather than an expansion merely for the reasons mentioned that they can charge a full 50 price tag on it but it is likely we will see the following trends in factions crossover to C3:

1) We are too busy fixing bugs for C3 as the the auction house errmm we are working on it still......next chapter maybe...

2) Oh we just introduced a buff to a certain weapon mod and adjusted new armour stats..but we are too busy fixing bug you know like fixing the existing ones...hey i got an idea why dont you just buy new armour and farm the new mods ^^ i love purple for armours.

3) Oh did i forget to mention since we have like you know millions of players from both chapters, the new story line will be even shorter so you can just rush to the fun bits at level 20 fighting bosses that are lvl 30 that does double damage, auto fastcast and can solo your team by spiking. Weeee fun fun. Did i mention i like purple ^^

4) And of course dont make me repeat the benefits of you know linking your accounts. Losing a storage and 2 slots is nothing compared being able to play everything on all continents, it like 3X100=600. Oh did i forget, you can always buy more character slots from us for 10 bucks, slots are expensive to maintain server side you know thats why everyone has been getting so much lag cause we didnt earn enough to upgrade our servers. Purple is the best dye for everything ^^.

i would prefer expansion.

to be honest, chances are, if someone doesnt have guild wars by chapter 2, obviously doesnt want guild wars by chapter 3. So they might as well make it an expansion.

All chapters are different in some way.

1. Prophecies is something for everyone. RPers get to roleplay in Tyria, powergamers get to play pvp etc..

2. Factions is interesting for the Asian players since it's halfway based around asian themed stuff.
Not just Asians but also Germans and Greek players tend to love it (serious, kurzick = germany and luxon = greece while cantha = china/japan)
It's a bit more for powergamers. Much easier access to perfect items (I don't remember any -5 energy collectors or traders in GW:P) and a large playground for these powergamers (all of cantha mainland = lvl 20 based stuff)

3. Nightfall will probably be interesting for the south-european people and north african (there are a crapload of north african players)
If it has any egyptian stuffs then people interested in history might even pop in too.

All of them can be used as stand alone so each of them is worth 50$.
Linking them together should at least give you one extra line of storage, if only..

Ah yes, your right! they did say that..

So to continue the speculation:

assuming they wont ever make any new content for prophecies
assuming they will now be "back on track" with the '_Expansion_ every 6 months'

remember 'expansion' means additional content to an existing game

Does this mean the expansions will only ever be for factions?.. seems unlikley as they would fast run out of map space.

It's going to be a harder sell to get me to buy another Guild Wars expansion at 50 dollars. Stand alone nothing, far too much of Factions stands on the Core content, and this can only get worse the further it goes. This is especially a problem for getting new blood in PvP.

While I like a sizable handful of factions skills, too many of them are either redundant or outclassed by skills I already have. It some cases, it can be like having to buy an entire box of the new set of Magic the Gathering to get like, five cards you want for your existing decks. New explorable areas are nice to play around in, but even they can get boring. Not to mention to keep up with monsters, Anet has to figure out new ways to compensate for limitations in scripting by giving them gross advantages. Which I'm OK with, but sometimes that doesn't isn't enough wet the appetite on fresh and challenging content.

So yeah, my main concern is how they're going to manage adding new skills, new zones, and new monsters in an interesting enough way since they more than likely won't break the player level cap and all that other fun stuff. If there aren't any new skills to aspire to, then there really isn't much in common with other RPGs that almost always give you something to work your characters towards. I don't mind paying 50 bucks for each chapter, as long as it doesn't feel like Chapter 1.5 or 2.5. In some cases, Factions felt like a .5 to me.

ok ok, so i was a month out either side, but they originally said they would release a new "addon" (in some form or another) Every 6 months, and with Sorrows Furnace, they did that, Prophecies, then Sorrows Furnace, then Factions, are all 6 months apart (give or take a couple of weeks)
